Building a Bespoke Booking Platform for a New Passenger Ferry
The Client
Quay 2 Quay is a venture-capital-backed passenger ferry service operating between Lymington and Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.
As a completely new ferry service, there was no existing booking platform, ticketing infrastructure or timetable system to inherit.
The business needed more than a website. It needed the digital infrastructure required to sell tickets and help operate the ferry service itself.
The Challenge
From a customer's perspective, booking a ferry ticket should feel simple.
Behind that experience, however, Quay 2 Quay needed a system capable of managing timetables, availability, online ticket sales, confirmation emails, private events, onsite purchases and passenger boarding.
Because this was a new service, these systems had to be designed and developed from scratch.
More importantly, they couldn't operate independently. If the ferry was unavailable for a private charter, for example, that needed to be reflected immediately across online bookings, onsite sales and timetable availability.
The challenge was therefore to make a complicated operational system feel like a straightforward booking website to the customer.
What We Did
- 1Designed and developed the Quay 2 Quay website from scratch.
- 2Built a completely bespoke ferry booking platform.
- 3Developed a custom timetable and availability engine.
- 4Created the complete online ticket purchasing journey.
- 5Built automated booking confirmation and ticket emails.
- 6Developed functionality to block crossings for private charters and events.
- 7Created an onsite ticket sales system connected to the same booking infrastructure.
- 8Developed a ticket scanning and passenger boarding process.
- 9Connected online and onsite ticket sales through one underlying system.
- 10Ensured availability remained synchronised across the different sales channels.
- 11Built the customer-facing experience around simplicity despite the complexity of the system operating behind it.
- 12Set up email marketing infrastructure to support the launch and rapidly growing audience.
The individual features weren't developed as separate additions. They were designed as parts of one connected booking and operational platform.
The Results
Demand following the launch was significant for a completely new ferry route with no established customer base.
Email subscriptions also grew quickly enough that Quay 2 Quay repeatedly needed to increase the capacity of its email marketing plan.
The Outcome
Quay 2 Quay launched with much more than a new website.
Behind the simple customer-facing booking journey is a bespoke platform responsible for key parts of the ferry's day-to-day operation.
Timetables determine which crossings customers can book. Availability is shared between online and onsite sales. Private events can remove crossings from general availability, while purchased tickets can subsequently be validated during passenger boarding.
All of these components work together as a single system.
The result is a website that remains straightforward for passengers while handling timetabling, ticket sales, private hire availability and boarding behind the scenes.
Within months of launch, the website was already attracting more than 700 visitors per day, demonstrating significant early demand for the new service.
